Ear Flap Hats for Warm Trick-or-Treaters!

Do you remember when I shared my pattern for ear flap hats?

There are many variations you can make to this pattern, and it's great for Halloween because you can add eyes or ears to it for a number of different costumes.

One of my lovely readers, Chelsea K, used my ear flap hat pattern as part of her son's Halloween costumes for the last two years. Here's the hat used in the Pocoyo costume she made him...

And here's the hat as part of a dog costume she made him the next year...

They live in Maine so she was glad to find an easy pattern to keep her son warm while trick-or-treating!

Thanks for sharing Chelsea!

Featured Readers!

I wanted to share a couple of the recent pictures I've received from readers who have made some of the projects on my site! Here we go:

Shona Mason used my Bible Cover sewing tutorial to make two pretty bible covers using an assortment of recycled fabric pieces! She didn't use a serger so she cut extra lining and folded it around the inner seams and hand-stitched them for a smooth finish. Here they are:

Sarah S. used my DIY Baby's Sleep Sack tutorial to make a sleep sack for her son. She wrote me back, glad for the  "super easy sleep sack pattern". She's a beginning seamstress and thought it was very easy to make. Here's hers, modeled by her sweet little Sammy:

Thanks for sharing Shona and Sarah!

Dish Towel Bib Tutorial

You know how babies are perfect eaters and never look like this?

Oh, right. They always look like that. My little guy went through a phase of yanking off any and every bib, which didn't do any favors for his clothes. So I started using dish towel bibs. They are easy to pop on over his head but he can't yank them off (for now). And best of all, the towel is a generous size to cover his entire body from neck to leg. I just tuck it under him around the edges and his clothes stay clean.

These are super-easy to make... all that's required is a dish towel, a little ribbing, and a teeny bit of time.

DIY Baby's Sleep Sack (Sewing Tutorial)

When our little guy outgrew his 0-9 mo sleep sack at age 6 mo, I came up with this pattern for a new one that will be plenty long for his growing little legs.

Fleece Hat with Ear Flaps - Tutorial and Printable Pattern!

This is one of my favorite sewing projects... it's cute, warm, practical, and so so versatile. I have a downloadable pattern available to print for babies to adults!

Above I added little pom poms but you can add simple animal eyes or ears, or any number of variations to make each hat unique and fun. I used this same pattern when making the hat for my son's frog Halloween costume...

Rag Quilt Sewing Tutorial

This is the quilt that anyone can make, even if you've never sewn before! If you're at all intimidated by making traditional quilts, then this is the quilt for you! It's very doable. And you can make it in any size you want- for babies to adults.

Here's what one of my quilts looks like:

Rag Bag Sewing Tutorial

As if I don't have enough bags already! I didn't have a cute one in these exact proportions though. This fun little bag is made by rag quilting squares together in the shape of a bag. It's super simple, and (in my humble opinion) super cute! The size is perfect for carrying a couple binders or notebooks, your Bible and class material, etc.

Pack & Play Sheet (Sewing Tutorial)

These are surprisingly simple and quick to make. Just cut your fabric to size, sew a couple quick seams, and you're done! These snug-fitting sheets don't even need elastic.

Make Your Own Bible Cover (Sewing Tutorial)

My Bible is larger than the typical size which made it a pain to find a cover for, especially since I’m picky anyway. Many Bible covers have a strap coming out of the spine end which means that the Bible is resting on its pages when being carried by the strap. For stiff Bibles or those w/ hard covers this probably doesn’t make a difference, but since mine’s soft and I want to keep the pages in good shape, I want the Bible to be resting on its spine while being carried by the straps instead. So I’ve designed it according to that requirement. I also placed a generous sized hidden pocket in it to accommodate my pencil case for underlining, as well as a couple outer pockets b/c it’s nice to have a place to stash a few papers.
