Here's one family's reading room... I L.O.V.E. it!!! They use rain gutter shelving, which is an inexpensive way to face books outwards, appealing especially to young children.

It's the first room you see when entering the house, so she conceals clutter and closes curtains over the whiteboard for the room to double as a family room.
