Fleece Hat with Ear Flaps - Tutorial and Printable Pattern!

This is one of my favorite sewing projects... it's cute, warm, practical, and so so versatile. I have a downloadable pattern available to print for babies to adults!

Above I added little pom poms but you can add simple animal eyes or ears, or any number of variations to make each hat unique and fun. I used this same pattern when making the hat for my son's frog Halloween costume...

Want to see what else you can do with it? Here are some pictures I've received back from my lovely readers who used my tutorial to make their own fleece ear flap hats....................

-------------------------

Angelina J. of Sacramento, CA used this pattern to make an adorable Yoda hat for her six month old, Shane! She doesn't own a sewing machine, and worked on this during nap time for two days. Somehow, I think the paci completes the full Yoda look, don't you? Precious!

-------------------------

Regina M. of Wasilla, Alaska used this pattern to make her very first successful sewing project! Here's her one-year-old son, Oskar, modeling it...

-------------------------

Ann from Toronto Canada used it to make her 10-month-old daughter's Minnie Mouse costume, which helped keep her warm while trick-or-treating in the cold. The great thing about these hats is they can still be used for every-day-cuteness all through winter, not just for Halloween...

 -------------------------

Sarah B. Of Liverpool, NY used my pattern to make her son's Halloween costume as well (he's Loki, from the Avengers). The fabric she used wasn't stretchy so it took a couple tries to get it to fit right, but she loved the pattern and said it didn't take her long at all...

-------------------------

Tracy R. used it to make several hats last year as her first sewing project. She used it again this year to make her son a mohawk hat to match his coat because she couldn't find any in stores without skulls allover them. (I feel your pain... I don't get the attraction to skulls either and they are on lots of boys' clothes.)

-------------------------

Angela D. of Maryland made several hats with embellishments and is sure she'll make more in the future. Here's her favorite one...

-------------------------

Andrea R. made the ear flap hat with matching scarf to velcro in place and even some gloves too. She posted about it on her blog, HERE.
-------------------------

Renee K. made some creative additions to the pattern with this polar fleece vikings hat for her granddaughter...

 -------------------------

Caitlin, from Fredericksburg, TX used my pattern to make her son's first Halloween costume. She says she's far from a seamstress but this was so simple that she already has plans for another one. Here's little three-week-old Eli as Yoda for his first Halloween...

-------------------------

Chelsea K, used my pattern as part of her son's Halloween costumes for the last two years. Here's the hat used in the Pocoyo costume she made him...

And here's the hat as part of a dog costume she made him the next year...
They live in Maine so she was glad to find an easy pattern to keep her son warm while trick-or-treating!

Jennifer from St. Louis, MO shared the warm, fuzzy ear flap hat she made for her son...

And here's one more Yoda hat from Krysten in NewYork...

Thank you gals for sharing your pictures!! :)

  1. Hi, I started sewing on my grandma's old (35 years old!) sewing machine a few weeks ago and as I scrolled over the net to find tutorials for Xmas présents I came accross your website. I've just printed out the tutorial for the fleece hat and posted a link on the blog I've just created, so that others in France can find it and benefit from all your great suggestions and tutorials. Thanks a lot!

  2. Tracy, I am having a hard time getting the ear flaps to be the right size in length for any hats that I make that are not full size even when I print both pattern pieces at the same percentage, example 80%. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I love the hats!

    1. Hi Dawna, sorry for my delay in responding! Do you mean how long they hang over the ears or around the circumference of the head? I wrapped the ear flap portion around my boys' heads, pinned them the right size, then sewed and adjusted accordingly to make it work with the rest of the hat. Basically if the pattern isn't fitting just perfectly then alter it as needed. I hope this helps, though it's not a precise answer. It took a little trial and error when I made the pattern.

  3. For your Mohawk hat ,did you use fleece or felt for the mohawk part ? I am having trouble having it stand up.

    1. That was one that a reader made using my tutorial. So I'm not sure what she used. I would've thought just fleece.

  6. Hello Tracy,

I love this hat but similarly can't seem to download the pattern. Is there a way you could email me the pattern? My son is 13mo and will be yoda for halloween :)

  7. I decided to make a hat for my great niece this morning. I will see her later today for Christmas. I needed to use just the fleece I had in the house. The outside is a pink camophlage but the reversible inside is for her Wisconsin Badger!

  8. Merci Tracy,
Ce tuto est simple et bien expliqué. J'ai fait un chapeau de Yoda en tissu de sweat-shirt pour mon petit-fils de 2 ans. J'attends maintenant Noel avec impatience pour voir le chapeau sur sa tête. Merci!

  9. Hi Tracy,

I just came across your page and was looking to make this for my son’s Halloween costume (he’s going as Olaf). However, I’m having trouble downloading the files. Could you possibly email it to me. He’s 9 months old.

    Thank you,
